Sunday Morning Bonus Pulp: Planet Stories, May 1943

The Fiction House pulps always had great covers, and PLANET STORIES was no exception. This one is by Jerome Rozen, and it's a fine example of swashbuckling science fiction adventure. Among the authors inside are Leigh Brackett, Ross Rocklynne, Hannes Bok, and H.L. Gold. A lot of modern SF fans might turn their noses up at this stuff, but it's wonderful to me.

I miss the old days.

For the last 40 years I've owned the preliminary cover sketch by Rozen for this issue. It's about the size of the pulp, done on tissue paper in color. The finished cover painting must be around somewhere but so many were destroyed or lost over the years.

I like PLANET STORIES also; so much that I managed to be the winner bidder of the set owned by Frank Robinson. White pages and glossy covers. They look like they are just off the newsstand.

Any issue of Planet with a Leigh Brackett story in it is a good one. Planet is one of my all time favorite SF pulps. Color me green with envy Walker for that set you got from the Frank Robinson estate.

Exactly the kind of stuff I love

I see our hero is number 9...number 9... number 9...

That's a great cover, all right. I'll be that set you bought, Walker, cost a pretty penny. What did you so with the issues you already had?

I now have two sets of PLANET STORIES, one that is too nice to read and one that I can read without worrying about the condition!

You'd have to be a pretty sad example of a antiquated snob to turn one's nose up at PLANET, particularly in the magazine's Jerome Bixby years. In a sense, it was the only other magazine along with ASTOUNDING to help define a category of sf...unless we count the advocacy of cultism in both AMAZING and ASTOUNDING. We I'd be happy to discount.
